We closed out 2023 on a high note, figuratively and literally, at Vista Maria. A few of the kids made comments about how tough the holidays can be for them. That’s pretty easy to understand, since residential placement has them away from whatever familiar Holiday traditions they may have had in their lives. They also said that sharing their feelings in song made the season a little easier. Seeing their smiles and enthusiasm on stage at the end of the week was a gift. While we can’t show you those smiles, we can stage the scene for you.
The kids we had in the first three days were all new to the Lost Voices experience, so we took some time getting to know them personally and musically. They were brimming over with ideas for individual songs, and they wrote some great ones. They also dug right into a group song expressing hope and aspirations for the year(s) ahead:
New Year, New Me
Chorus:
New Year, new me
Finally I’m free
Learning and growing
Working on me
Refresh, restart
Finally I’m free
Before it falls apart
Working on me
Outside it’s snowing
Inside I’m growing
Christmas lights a’glowing
Day by day, it’s showing
The wind is blowing
The river is flowing
There’s no way of knowing
But day by day it’s showing
(Chorus)
Healing and growing
The seeds that I’m sowing
Dead leaves I’m mowing
And day by day it’s showing
The time is coming
The snow is flowing
We are done running
We become knowing
(Chorus)
Now we are shining
Now are are winning
Welcome us to a new life,
To a new beginning
(Chorus & repeat last phrase)
